Conducting Research Projects Guide: Storing your research documents

Guidance is provided to students engaging in empirical research projects for internships and post-graduate study

Storing your research documents

It is essential that you give consideration to how you plan on storing your research documentation.

Things to consider:

  • privacy of information - it is essential you take all necessary precautions to keep your data private.
  • how you will store any hard copies of your documents  - you need to ensure these are not left lying around for anyone to access or to get lost. It is important to have a lockable drawer or cupboard to store hard copies in.
  • how you will store any digital copies of your documents - all electronic copies should be stored behind a password or passphrase that only you know.
  • saving digital documents - you need to back up all your work so that if your computer dies, is stolen or lost, you do not lose your work.  For this reason, cloud storage is a necessary option.  Storing your work on portable drives (USB sticks, external drives) can be problematic as they can be lost, stolen or can become corrupted.
