Research and Information Skills : Referencing

This guide takes you through the research process including how to define your topic, search for resources, evaluate information and research methodologies.

General points

As part of academic writing, you are expected to refer to the writings, thoughts, and work of other people.  You use other peoples ideas to support the points you are making.

To avoid plagiarism (copying), it is necessary to reference all information that is not your own.

At UCOL we use the APA7 style of referencing.

In order to ensure that you use the correct formatting for referencing, there are several helpful resources provided by UCOL to guide you.  These include the APA subject guide, several different handouts, and workshops.  You are also welcome to ask for help at the library desk or make an appointment with a librarian to get more in depth help.

APA subject guide

The APA subject guide was developed to provide you with detailed explanation of APA rules and specific examples that you can follow.  It can be found on the library webpage in the Subject Guide tile.

Once you have clicked on the subject guide, you then click on the appropriate tab on the left hand side of the page depending on what kind of source you are using.  For example, by clicking on Books, you will see all the rules and examples for referencing books.  Scroll down the page for more examples.

Handouts

There are a number of APA handouts available in the library, on the wall in the Student Success area and on the library website.  Just help yourself to any handouts or ask at the Library desk or Learning Advisors office if you cannot find them.
