APA 7 Referencing

The Bible (print version)

When quoting or paraphrasing from the Bible include in your citation:

  • the title of the version you are using e.g. King James Version
  • the year of the original publication and the year of the republished version e.g. 1769/2017
  • if the original year is unknown, include only the year of the republished version.
  • the book, chapter and verse being referred to e.g. 1 Cor. 13:1
  • In the reference list, the name of the version of the bible is italicised.
  • In your reference list entry include only the title of the bible version, date of reprint and name of publisher.

Example:

(King James Bible, 1769/2017, 1 Cor. 13:1).

King James Bible. (2017). Broadman & Holman. (Original work published 1769).

(APA manual, 2020, pp. 264, 274, 302, 325).

The Bible (online version)

Apply the same rules regarding in-text citations as for the print version 

In the reference list entry, include the title of the online bible and the url after the date of publication.

Example:

King James Bible. (2017). King James Bible Online. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/ (Original work published 1769).

(APA manual, 2020, pp. 264, 274, 302, 325).

The Torah

Apply the same rules to the Torah as for The Bible.

Example:

(The Torah, 1962/2015,  Proverbs 24:16).

The Torah (3rd ed.). (2015). The Jewish Publication Society. (Original work published 1962).

(APA manual, 2020, pp. 264, 274, 302, 325).

The Qu'ran

Apply the same rules to the Qu'ran as to the Bible.

In the reference list, include the translation after The Qu'ran.

Example:

(The Qu'ran, 2004, Surah baqrah:152).

The Qu'ran (M. A. S. Abdel Haleem, Trans.). (2004). Oxford University Press.
